Global demand for rapeseed (canola) oil remains strong due to its versatile use in food and biofuels, with annual production ~30 Mt (≈15% of vegetable oils). Prices have fluctuated recently: record harvests in 2024/25 eased supply (pressuring prices), but tightening stocks and steady biodiesel demand are expected to support levels in 2026. Deko Group offers competitively-priced crude rapeseed oil from Europe, South Africa, and South America, shipped in bulk using 24,000 L flexitanks (one flexitank ≈24 t oil). Flexitanks maximize container capacity (≈40–50% more per container than drums), cut handling costs, and eliminate cleaning. A planned monthly supply of 20,000 MT can be met by roughly 800–900 flexitanks shipped on container vessels, supplemented by occasional small bulk carriers for balance.
Quality is assured by standard edible-oil specs (e.g. FFA ≤2%, moisture <0.3%) and compliance with EU/US regulations on pesticides, heavy metals and PAHs. Risks (contamination, cold solidification) are managed by proper cleaning, temperature control (maintain ~15–24 °C), insurance, and force‑majeure clauses.
Contracts use typical terms (e.g. FOB/CIF, letters of credit, monthly delivery schedule, liquidated damages for delays). Sustainability and traceability are emphasized: e.g. EU-origin oil is non‑GMO and can carry local sustainability certification, South African and South American sources are monitored for good agricultural practice, and flexitanks are fully recyclable.
In practice, shipments would be scheduled continuously. For example, Europe-origin tanks depart on a weekly (or biweekly) container sailing; similarly for South Africa and South America. One 24,000 m³ container vessel (≈1,000 TEU) can carry ~400 flexitanks at a time, easily handling the ~8,800 t from Europe each month. Smaller feeder vessels or full-container services handle the South African leg, and trans-Atlantic liners the South America–Europe leg. After sea transport, oil is pumped out into local tank storage or directly into inland tankers. Trucks or rail then deliver the oil to buyers or refineries.
Unloading: Flexitanks are drained by pump into tanks; containers can be returned empty (no flexitank) or flexitanks disposed locally.
Storage: Standard food-grade storage tanks (stainless or epoxy) at each port and on destination.
Crude rapeseed oil (low-erucic acid) must meet edible oil quality standards. Typical specs (commodity/FOSFA or USDA style) include:
Free Fatty Acids ≤ 2.0% (as oleic)
Moisture & volatile matter <0.30%, unsaponifiables ≤ 2%, clear appearance, typical taste/odor
Rapeseed oil also contains natural carotenoids (color), but must be free of off-odors. Prior to shipment, the oil is filtered and dried to remove solids and water (residual moisture accelerates rancidity). The acid (FFA) value should be low (≤0.6–2%) to ensure freshness. Analytical certificates (GC analysis of FAME, iodine value, color, PV, etc.) are issued per shipment.
Regulatory requirements depend on destination: for EU/US markets, any pesticides must be below Maximum Residue Limits (Reg (EC) 396/2005) and any contaminants (dioxins, PCBs) below EU limits (Reg 1881/2006). Heavy metals are capped (EU: e.g. Pb ≤0.1 mg/kg, As ≤0.4 mg/kg, etc). EU law also limits PAHs in oils (e.g. Benzo[a]pyrene <2 μg/kg, sum of 4 PAHs <10 μg/kg).
Mandatory food safety measures (e.g. HACCP in the supply chain) apply. No phytosanitary (plant health) certificate is needed for processed oil, but a Certificate of Origin and commercial invoice are standard.
Storage/Transit: Oil must be kept above its cloud point; rapeseed oil remains fluid above ≈0–10 °C (solidifies below ~0–15 °C. Container tracks or temperature loggers may be used if routing through cold zones.
